The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place is the story of three children who were raised by wolves and their governess, Miss Penelope Lumley. There are ostriches, playwrights, pirates, wise sayings from Agatha Swanburne – headmistress of the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females, evil curses, a peer of the realm who bays at the full moon.
In The Unmapped Sea the Ashtons holiday in Brighton (although Mrs. Ashton is convinced they’re going to Italy and is practicing her Italian). Since it’s winter, the beach is not at its best, but the incorrigible children make do with dinosaur bones, papier mâché sea shells and a very badly behaved family from Plinsk, while Miss Lumley and Simon Harley Dickenson attempt to convince old uncle Pudge that the ghost of Admiral Ashton has returned, in order to get the details of what happened on the mysterious island of Awoo-awoo.
In other words, it’s an absolute delight.
